Because the symbol is unpronounceable, hes often referred by others as The Symbol, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, T.A.F.K.A.P., or simply The Artist - the formally correct term (later copyrighted printed on releases ) is Love Symbol.Instead, its a tight but only occasionally transcendent product of its time, with Prince reacting against hip-hop (Dead On It) while penning funky odes to Cindy Crawford (the awkward Cindy C).Thats what Prince spent his four-decade career creating, leaving us with one of the most voluminous and (at times) intimidating bodies of work of any artist, musical or otherwise. With dozens of studio releases (only 31 of which were counting as distinct, non-instrumental LPs issued under his name andor symbol) not all of them can be great, betraying a fearless experimentation that fell flat as often as it soared.
And then theres the matter of Princes digital obstinance, a position his estate has largely held since his April 21, 2016, death, only slightly loosening restrictions on making his catalog available via streaming services. Albums By Prince Full Breadth OfApropos of Princes old-school work ethic, you may have to track some of these down in physical form to hear the full breadth of this raging, stylish, improbable force-of-wills prolificacy. Even then, there are hidden tracks, audio pranks, temporal figure-eights, and unreleased songs galore. We sorted through all of it, and put in the work to rank every last one. ![]() MPLSound fares a bit better as it unravels familiar 1980s and 90s tonestricks. Still, its a stultifying slog with few noticeable landmarks. The thoughtless clip artan unfortunately common motif in Princes discographycontains 11 fans-only tracks co-written with producer Joshua Welton, who was only 25 when this was released (his wife, Hannah, was the drummer for late-period collaborators 3rdEyeGirl). It isnt terrible, but if you find yourself hitting this deeply self-referential vein while mining the depths of The Purple Ones catalog, consider going outside for some fresh air and sunlight. You may remember this as the album that pissed off English record labels when Prince tried to give it away with copies of The Mail on Sunday. Somewhere Here on Earth, at least, is a satisfyingly 70s-flavored sex ballad that exhibits a falsetto in fine form. The title track is an example of its multiple-personality weakness, with solid melodies and performances but ill-considered production. Weirdly, I often think of it as a companion to Sugars Beaster, if only because the cover art was similar. Beaster was better.). Instead, Rave landed like a wounded bird, trying its best to look composed and alert while folding an injured wing under its body. Truly, this Tidal-released LP (Princes last before his death) is better than Phase One, which came out the same year. But how can you listen to songs like Xtralovable and Groovy Potential with a straight face The disco affectations, tepid horns, and phoned-in lyrics are charming, at best. ![]() Albums By Prince Series Of ImprovisationsEven with the Hendrix-like authority of a killer power-trio propping him up, Princes songwriting barely rises to the occasion, sounding like a series of improvisations borne of an inspired practice session. Still, its proudly synthetic production (see the sumptuous, 80s-leaning Beginning Endlessly) and savvy sequencing (slow-jams like Walk in Sand arrive exactly when they should) have allowed it to age well, missteps aside. Princes skill as an arranger and bandleader is at the fore, with faith-based, spoken-word jazz numbers blending naturally with sweet sentiments such as She Loves Me 4 Me. A great Sunday-afternoon platter, provided you can get past the moralizing.
